Ryan Estes Photography Blog bio picture

Welcome to the Ryan Estes Photography Blog

I'm Ryan, and you'll often find me with camera in hand.  I live and work in the greater Philadelphia area providing brides, grooms, and families with cutting-edge photography.  Here you'll find the latest images, news, and bits of this and that from Ryan Estes Photography.  Come back often -- there's a lot happening, both in my life and in those of my clients.

What sort of images can you expect to see?  That's a difficult question to answer... photojournalism + fashion, portraiture + landscape, documentary + candid... real people on the most important day of their lives, and genuine emotions shining through.

One thing is clear: these aren't your grandmother's wedding pictures.  (No offense to your grandmother, of course...)

Going old school

There’s nothing like getting a roll of film back from the lab. Years ago when I first took to this whole thing called photography, waiting two weeks for my film to come in was torture… but every time I opened that envelope to look at my pictures for the first time, it was magical.

Enter digital, and the age of instant gratification. Suddenly there was no more waiting! I could see the images on the back of the camera RIGHT NOW, and it made photography that much more fun.

But over time I realized I miss the mystery of film… there’s something pure about it, and while I will always shoot digitally, lately I’ve been wanting to add film back into my work. So guess what? I did. I have started shooting a few rolls of film at each wedding, and it’s helping me to change how I think when I set out to make an image. And today I experienced a bit of that old magic when the delivery man dropped a package at my door…

I love this image from Amy & Jay’s wedding in September (more from that coming soon!). Along with most of these here, this was taken on Fuji Neopan 1600.

Here’s one of Jay.

Check out the grain on this one! This was shot in the *dark* ballroom on Ilford Delta 3200. No flash. Yeah!

These two are from Carrie & Dana’s wedding the very next day. Here’s Carrie at the salon.

And Dana, looking very GQ.

So while I’ll continue to put out the vibrant, colorful images you’re used to seeing here, know that photography is a journey for me, and I am always seeking out ways to deliver the absolute best images possible. It’s going to be fun.

October 2, 2008 - 1:34 pm nancy - i do kind of miss those days! i remember being at longwood gardens with a friend...watching some kids with their cameras, snapping away. i told me friend it's weird to think that they won't know anything else than seeing their pictures right away! it probably sharpens your skills as a photographer using film and not being able to rely on photoshop and stuff :-)

October 2, 2008 - 5:10 pm Pete Malone - Well Nancy.... Think about how much it sharpens your skills as a photographer by seeing and being able to compensate for your mistakes right away!

October 3, 2008 - 7:05 am sofia negron - cool! I don't even know if my film cameras still work. I myself have been thinking about shooting a few rolls to see how it would turn out.

October 3, 2008 - 9:55 am nancy - very true peter! i'm definitely thankful for digital...as a VERY amateur photographer (just for fun) i'd spend a fortune on film, developing lots of mistakes! ps-just checked out your site...you do beautiful work!

October 3, 2008 - 12:19 pm amy jones - great photos! excited to see the rest :)
