Ryan Estes Photography Blog bio picture

Welcome to the Ryan Estes Photography Blog

I'm Ryan, and you'll often find me with camera in hand.  I live and work in the greater Philadelphia area providing brides, grooms, and families with cutting-edge photography.  Here you'll find the latest images, news, and bits of this and that from Ryan Estes Photography.  Come back often -- there's a lot happening, both in my life and in those of my clients.

What sort of images can you expect to see?  That's a difficult question to answer... photojournalism + fashion, portraiture + landscape, documentary + candid... real people on the most important day of their lives, and genuine emotions shining through.

One thing is clear: these aren't your grandmother's wedding pictures.  (No offense to your grandmother, of course...)

Park Hyatt at the Bellevue - Kim & Mike

Brace yourself… this will be a long post! Kim & Mike had an absolutely spectacular wedding on Saturday, and I had a crazy time trying to narrow down the photos to show here. It was a fantastic day, and I really enjoyed spending it with Kim and Mike and their families.

We started off at the Bellevue where Kim and the girls were getting ready.

Veronica from Perfect Weddings was on hand to make sure it all went smoothly… Thank you, Veronica, for making my job easy!

We headed upstairs to Nineteen for a few pictures before heading out to the ceremony.

Then it was over to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter & Paul for the ceremony. Here’s Mike, just waiting.

Great images can be made anywhere. Like an elevator, for instance.

After Kim did a quick wardrobe change, we grabbed her & Mike for a few more quick photos.

I also want to send a shout-out to Mike Smith of Ash Imagery for shooting with me — we’ll have to do it again soon!

Kim & Mike, thanks again to you, your friends, and your families. It was truly a pleasure.

March 4, 2009 - 8:33 pm Christina Martin - Ryan - I found your blog through LinkedIn (Mathew Baker). This wedding you posted is stunning. What type of camera/lenses are you using during the ceremony (the photos are so sharp)? The color is great - do you do anything special with the white balance? I loved the lighting at the reception - what type of strobes do you use and do you like them? Thanks for your help and keep up the good work. Christina

March 5, 2009 - 11:29 am Ryan - Hey Christina - thanks for your comment. I use Nikon D700's (actually that ceremony was shot with a combo of D700 and D300) with a variety of lenses... for the ceremony I primarily used the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8, and I think I also used the 85/1.4 and 10.5/2.8 fisheye for parts of it as well. Strobes during reception were simple Nikon SB-800's fired with PocketWizards. When processing in Lightroom I make sure to use the in-camera color profile instead of the LR default, and I custom white balance when needed during post to make sure the colors are true. I like to keep it simple. Hope that helps!

March 6, 2009 - 11:50 am Jaime - Hi Ryan! I'm working with Mike Landis for my April 17 wedding, and he just told me you'd be his second shooter that day, so I popped over to lurk a bit - and all I can say is WOW!!! How lucky can one girl get to have both of you to herself? These are incredible shots. The groom-straightening-his-tie-with-new-ring-on shot is one of my new must-takes! I'm excited to meet you and work with you! Have a great weekend.

March 10, 2009 - 8:55 pm Laura Eaton - Truly stunning images - your work just gets better and better!
